Mapping Your Domain to a WordPress Subsite

Now that you’ve created a Subsite in your WP Multisite environment, you can further personalize it by mapping a custom domain name to your subsite. Mapping your domain to a subsite will enable you to update your url from subsite.domain.com to yourdomain.com.

As of WordPress v4.5, Native Domain Mapping was added to WordPress core which made domain mapping even easier than ever before. Simply navigate to your network admin Sites section (/wp-admin/network/sites.php). Then click Edit on the site you wish to update and change the Site Address (URL) under the Info tab.

Updating and Pointing Your Domain Name

For this step, you will need to log into your Domain Name’s registrar such as GoDaddy, 1&1, Hostgator, etc.
Once you have logged into account, you will want to edit your Domain’s DNS settings. As this is different for each hosting provider, we’ll provide general instructions and steps which should enable you to make the proper updates.

  1. Find your Domain Name in your products/services
  2. Click on “Edit” or “Manage DNS”- the actual option names may differ depending on your domain registrar.
  3. If you domain name has an existing A record, may delete this as you will be pointing your domain name elsewhere.
  4. Create a CNAME record pointing your domain (www.domain.com) to your subsite.multisitedomain.com
  5. Allow up to 24 Hours for this to go live and enjoy!

Congrats! You have successfully pointed your domain name to your subsite. Allow up to 24 hours for changes to propagate and take effect.
